New coach Arne Slot happy to seek Klopp's advice
Feyenoord produced another excellent attacking display at the weekend, winning 5 - 0 against PEC Zwolle, but it was the post-match press conference that got most people's attention, as Arne Slot confirmed that he will talk with both Jurgen Klopp and Pep Ljinders, if and when, he is confirmed as the new Liverpool boss.
As has been the case in recent weeks, Slot faced more questions about his future at Liverpool, than about his team's performance in the Eredivisie, despite Feyenoord scoring 15 goals in their last four games.
After watching his side thrash PEC Zwolle 5 - 0 on Sunday, Arne Slot could be forgiven for being a bit annoyed that most of his post-match questions centred around Liverpool, and his impending appointment as Jurgen Klopp's successor.
However, Slot is clearly someone who likes a soundbite, as he happily discussed his plans to talk with Jurgen Klopp and Pep Ljinders in the future, once his appointment has been confirmed.
Answering questions from the English media, slot confirmed,
"I think it's normal that if you go to a new club, and if that would be Liverpool, it is normal that you contact the former coach. I did this when I went to Feyenoord as well. It's more than normal that, all the knowledge a person has that worked a few years at that club – and in his situation, even nine years – that you contact [Klopp]."
"Apart from that, I know his assistant quite well, Pep Lijnders. But if there’s an official confirmation when the season is done, it would be strange if I didn’t call him then."
For many managers, it's important to be seen stamping their authority on a new club, whether that means a change in tactics, personnel, or ethos. And while Slot will undoubtedly have his own way of doing things once he arrives at Anfield, he is also confident enough to seek the help of those who know the club and players best, and there is no one better than Klopp in that regard.
For his part, Klopp has spoken of his desire to remain a part of the Liverpool family and intends to visit Anfield as often as possible to watch matches, meaning Slot should have plenty of opportunity to speak with the legendary manager in the coming months.
Slot not worried about the delay in announcing his appointment
As well as speaking about Jurgen Klopp, Slot also confirmed that he is happy to wait for an official announcement regarding his future, saying that he is confident everything is in place,
"I'm not worried at all about whether [the move to Liverpool] will go ahead – the question is when it will be communicated."
"I think I agree on that, that it looked like that [a farewell]. Because of all the rumours in the media, I think they are expecting me to leave. Yeah, that is something we could say."
Given that news broke about Liverpool and Feyenoord negotiating for Slot's release several weeks ago, some fans and pundits have begun to question whether Slot will be Liverpool's new boss, but the 45-year-old Dutchman is not worried, stating,
"I am more than happy to answer any questions after the official announcement is made. I have all the confidence that will happen but for now, it hasn't been confirmed officially yet."
"There is a time and place to do so and this moment today is not that moment. There are three games to go for us and also for Liverpool."
Most people in the know believe the delay in announcing Slot's appointment is simply out of respect for all parties involved, with Feyenoord and Liverpool still to finish their respective league campaigns. Once both teams have played their final matches, an announcement confirming Slot as Liverpool's new Head Coach should be imminent.
