Klopp reacts to Alonso decision
Outgoing Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp has backed Xabi Alonso's decision to remain at Bayer Leverkusen, rather than move to Anfield next season.
Jurgen Klopp has backed Xabi Alonso's decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen next season, reflecting on a similar decision he made earlier in his career.
The Liverpool Manager was speaking at his pre-match press conference, ahead of this weekend's game against Brighton & Hove Albion, when he was asked for his opinion regarding Alonso's decision to reject Liverpool and stay with the German side for at least one more season.
In response, Klopp answered,
"He is doing an incredible job there."
"Leverkusen has a good team and they will probably keep the team together. That's a possibility and not all years it is like that, so I understand that he wants to do that."
"Being at a club in a similar situation [to Alonso], I did pretty much the same and I never regretted it."
The situation Klopp refers to relates to his time as Manager of Mainz 05 when he had offers to move to much larger teams in the German Bundesliga. Despite Mainz having one of the league's smallest budgets, Klopp chose to honour his contract with the club. It's clearly a decision he does not regret.
Liverpool's hunt for a new manager goes on
With the news that Alonso will not be replacing Klopp at Anfield, various names are being put forward as possible candidates for the Liverpool job.
Roberto De Zerbi and Ruben Amorim are considered the new favourites, with another potential candidate - Julian Nagelsmann, also dropping out of the running yesterday. Fellow German Thomas Tuchel has been mentioned, and while he is talented, he is also very divisive, with his time at Chelsea and Bayern Munich characterised by dressing room bust-ups and public arguments.
The picture should become clearer over the next few days and weeks, with Edwards and Hughes sure to be working on various deals behind the scenes.
