RIP Larry Lloyd

LFC - Back On Our Perch is saddened to learn of the passing of former Liverpool and Nottingham Forest defender Larry Lloyd, who has died at the age of 75.

Liverpool Football Club is today mourning the loss of one of England's finest defenders, after the passing of Larry Lloyd.

Lloyd started his career with Bristol Rovers, where he made 51 appearances, before being signed by Bill Shankly in April 1969.  Shankly was looking for a young defender to replace the aging Ron Yeats, with Lloyd making his Liverpool debut on the 237th September 1969, against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.  Although Lloyd would only made nine appearances in his first season at Anfield, he would soon form a formidable partnership with Tommy Smith, making over 200 appearances over the next four seasons.

Noted for his aerial ability and tough tackling, Lloyd would initially suffer disappointment with the Reds, as Shankly's side lost the FA Cup Final in 1971, and missed out on the 1972 League Title by a single point. However, the team was not to be denied, and during the 1972-73 season Lloyd started all 66 games that Liverpool played, as they won the League and UEFA Cup.

Although a defender, Lloyd had the personal satisfaction of scoring Liverpool's 3rd goal against Borussia Monchengladbach in the first leg of the UEFA Cup Final in 1993.  The goal was to prove decisive, as Liverpool won the first leg 3 - 0, lost the second leg 2 - 0, but ran out 3 - 2 winners on aggregate.

Sadly for Lloyd and Liverpool, there were to be no further trophies during his time at the club, however, further glories were in store, when Lloyd joined Nottingham Forest in 1976.  Under the Legendary Brian Clough, Lloyd and Forest lifted the European Cup in successive seasons (in 1979 and 1980), as well as winning the First Division Title and League Cup.

Over his 15-year career, Lloyd played 599 games, as well as being capped by England.
