Liverpool's young guns send Southampton packing

'Klopp's Kids' gave another excellent account of themselves, scoring three and keeping a clean sheet to steer Liverpool into the Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup.

  • Klopp names a young side with five Academy graduates in the Starting XI
  • Five more youngsters were named on the bench
  • The average age of the Starting XI was just 22
  • Southampton started the game well, with Kelleher making several excellent saves in the first 20 minutes
  • Harvey Elliott has Liverpool's first shot on target in the 41st minute
  • Lewis Koumas scores first senior Liverpool goal at the end of the first half
  • Van Dijk comes off at half-time, in a pre-planned substitution
  • Jayden Danns scores a second on 73 minutes - his first senior goal for the Reds
  • Trey Nyoni comes on in the 77th minute to make his debut, aged just 16 years, 7 months and 29 days
  • Danns gets his second, and Liverpool's third goal, in the 88th minute

'Klopp's Kids' produced another fantastic performance tonight, as the Reds eased past Southampton and into the Quarter-Finals of the FA Cup.

Southampton started the game brightly, with Caoimhin Kelleher making several excellent saves in the opening stages, as Liverpool's young players took time to grow into the game.  Indeed, Southampton should have made much more of the chances they created, with Kameldeen Sulemana proving to be a real handful down the left-hand side.

Liverpool's much-changed side were struggling to find any rhythm, and it took until the 41st minute before the Reds had a shot on target, as Elliott tested the Southampton keeper from long range.  Soon after though, Liverpool took the lead through debutant Lewis Koumas, after good work from from Bobby Clark on the left.  After collecting Clark's pass, Koumas showed good skill and awareness to cut onto his right foot, before shooting into the bottom corner of the goal.

As the game progressed into the second half, Southampton continued to pose a threat going forward but also took a lot of chances playing out from the back, with Liverpool nearly catching them out on several occasions. Then, on 73 minutes, Southampton overplayed at the back again, before losing the ball in midfield.  Liverpool drove forward through Elliott, who then slipped a lovely ball into Danns, who coolly clipped the ball over the keeper, to score his first Liverpool goal in front of the Kop!

And Danns was at it again 15 minutes later, when he reacted quickest in the box to slot home another goal after Conor Bradley's shot had been well saved.  As the game ticked toward full-time, Klopp gave Trey Nyoni his debut.  At just 16 years, 7 months, and 29 days, Nyoni is the third youngest player to ever represent the Reds.

As the referee blew the full-time whistle, Anfield rose to celebrate their new heroes, and another big step towards the quadruple.
