In anticipation of this afternoon's Carabao Cup Final against Chelsea, LFC - Back On Our Perch takes a look back at Liverpool's other appearances in the final.
The Reds are making a record 14th appearance in the League Cup Final, and aiming for a record 10th victory. The Red's first appearance in the Final came back in 1981, with their most recent appearance in 2022, when they also met Chelsea, famously winning on penalties.
1977/78 Season
18th March & 22nd March
Liverpool's first appearance in the League Cup Final ended in defeat, losing 1 - 0 to Nottingham Forest in a replay at Old Trafford.
1980/81 Season
14th March & 1st April
Liverpool defeated West Ham United in a replay at Villa Park to claim their first League Cup triumph. 100,000 people watched the first match at Wembley, which ended 1 - 1. Liverpool won the replay 2 - 1, thanks to goals from Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen.
1981/82 Season
13th March
Liverpool won their second League Cup title just a year later when they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3 - 1 after extra time. Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush scored the winning goals.
1982/83 Season
26th March
Liverpool made it a hat-trick of titles when they defeated arch-rivals Manchester United in the Final in 1983. Again Ronnie Whelan was the hero, scoring the winning goal in extra time.
1983/84 Season
25th March & 28th March
Liverpool won a record fourth consecutive League Cup title in 1984, beating city rivals Everton in a replay. After a 0 - 0 draw in the final at Wembley, Graeme Souness scored the winning goal in the replay at Maine Road.
1986/87 Season
5th April
Liverpool suffered their first League Cup Final defeat in 1987, losing 2 - 1 to Arsenal at Wembley. Despite taking the lead through Ian Rush, Charlie Nicholls scored twice to give Arsenal the victory.
1994/95 Season
2nd April
Liverpool returned to winning ways in the 1995 Final, defeating Bolton Wanderers 2 - 1. Steve McManaman was the hero with two goals, and the 'Man of the Match' award.
2000/2001 Season
25th February
Liverpool secured their sixth League Cup title against Birmingham City in 2001. Liverpool were heavy favourites in the final but were given a scare by Birmingham City, who took the game all the way to penalties. Andrew Johnson missed the decisive penalty for Birmingham. Liverpool would go on to win FA Cup and UEFA Cup that season.
2002/03 Season
2nd March
Liverpool were soon back in another final, this time against Manchester United. The match took place at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, whilst work was carried out on the new Wembley stadium. Liverpool won the match 2 - 0 with goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen, however, it was goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek who was the 'Man of the Match' after producing a string of impressive saves.
2004/05 Season
27th February
Liverpool tasted defeat for a second time in 2005, losing 3 - 2 to Chelsea in extra-time. This was the Red's first season under Rafa Benitez and began a bitter rivalry between Liverpool and Chelsea and Benitez and Mourinho.
2011/12 Season
26th February
After a 7 year wait, Liverpool were once again in a final, and this time came away victorious, after beating Cardiff City on penalties. Sir Kenny Dalglish was the Liverpool Manager, winning his final piece of silverware with the club.
2015/16 Season
28th February
Liverpool tasted defeat once more in 2016, losing to Manchester City on penalties. Despite City having a far superior team, Liverpool took them to penalties after a battling performance, but sadly lost their composure in the shoot-out, missing three penalties in a row to hand City the title.
2021/22 Season
27th February
Liverpool's last victory in the League Cup came in 2022 when they defeated Chelsea on penalties. After a boring 0 - 0 draw in 90 minutes, the game came to life in the penalty shootout. After all 10 outfield players on both sides had scored, it came down to the goalkeepers. Liverpool's young keeper Kelleher scored his penalty before Chelsea keeper Arrizabalaga blazed his kick high into the crowd.
