The long wait for European football is finally over, with both the Champions League and Europa League returning this week.
Liverpool fans will have to wait a little longer to see the team back in European action though, as the Reds have a bye to the next round of the Europa League, as a reward for winning their group.
Instead, tonight saw the 'Knockout Round Play-Offs' take place, with teams dropping down from the Champions League facing off against teams that finished second in their Europa League group. The round is played over two legs, with each team playing home and away. Tonight saw the first leg matches, with the second leg games being played on Thursday 22nd February 2024.
The eight teams that qualified from the Europa League group stages are : Freiburg, Marseille, Sparta Prague, Sporting CP, Toulouse, Rennes, Roma, and Qarabag.
The eight teams that dropped down from the Champions League are : Benfica, Braga, Feyenoord, Galatasaray, Lens, Milan, Rennes, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Young Boys

First Leg Results
Feyenoord 1 - 1 Roma
Galatasaray 3 - 2 Sparta Prague
Shakhtar Donetsk 2 - 2 Marseille
Young Boys 1 - 3 Sporting Lisbon
Benfica 2 - 1 Toulouse
Lens 0 - 0 Freiburg
Milan 3 - 0 Rennes
Sporting Braga 2 - 4 Qarabag
Whilst many of the ties remain evenly poised, Milan, Sporting Lisbon, and Qarabag have a commanding lead to take into the second legs next week, and will be favourites to progress from their matches.
