Despite being the pre-tournament favourites, Japan have crashed out of the Asian Cup at the Quarter Final stage, losing 2 - 1 to Iran.
After beating Bahrain in the Round of 16 last Wednesday (the same day Liverpool thrashed Chelsea 4 - 1), Japan looked to have a clear path to the Semi Finals. Iran, however, had other ideas, and despite falling behind to a Hidemasa Morita goal in the 28th minute, Iran rallied and equalised soon after half time. As the game headed towards extra time, Iran were awarded a 96th minute penalty, which Alireza Jahanbankhsh coolly converted, to send Iran through - and eliminate Japan.
Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo played in all five of Japan's games - and Captained the side - but was unable to stop them crashing out much earlier than expected.
Iran now face Qatar om Wednesday 7th February for a place in the Final.
Bad for Japan - Good for Liverpool...
Japan's elimination means Wataru Endo can now return to Liverpool, and concentrate on his club football, as the Reds march on towards an unprecedented Quadruple.
In Endo's absence, Alexis Mac Allister has been playing the no.6 role at Anfield, and producing some spectacular displays in the process. It's unlikely then, that Endo will go straight back into the Liverpool team, but having another full international on the bench will greatly benefit the Reds.
Also, Endo was in great form himself before he left for the competition, so Reds fans will be hoping that he can pick up where he left off.
Endo will not arrive back on Merseyside for a couple of days, so will not be available for the Arsenal game tomorrow, but should be back in the squad for Liverpool's home game against Burnley on Saturday 10th February.
