Liverpool granted Phil Thompson the perfect Birthday present, cruising past AFC Bournemouth to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League.
The legendary defender, who turned 70 today, was born in Kirkby, and grew up supporting Liverpool. The day after his 17th Bithday, Thompson signed a professional contract with the Reds, making his debut the following year against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Within two years Thompson had cemented his place in the Reds defence, where he remained for a further 11 years.
In total, Thompson spent 13 years at Anfield, making 477 appearances. He played under legendary managers Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley. After retiring at the age of just 31, Thompson was recruited by new Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish, joining the Liverpool coaching team, where he stayed for four years. Thompson returned to Liverpool again in 1998, becoming assistant to Gerard Houllier, and spent another 6 years at the club.
Thompson also played 42 times for England.
Happy Birthday Phil Thompson from everyone at LFC - Back On Our Perch.
