The FA Cup has a unique place in English football. Aside from being the oldest club competition in the world, there is a romanticism attached to the cup, which thrills and excites fans every year. Whilst many overseas players and managers may fail to fully grasp the importance of the FA Cup, for many English players, the cup is the one trophy they really want to win in their career.
It also offers smaller teams the chance to shine on the grandest stage, with 'giant killings' and 'cupsets' part of the fabric of the competition. Liverpool know this only too well, with the 1988 Cup Final against Wimbledon, serving as stark reminder that even the greatest teams can be humbled by the cup.
