Liverpool win Charity Shield, beating rivals Man City 3-1 in season opener!
Liverpool got their season underway in perfect fashion this afternoon, beating rivals Man City 3-1 to claim the FA Charity Shield. It is the first time Jurgen Klopp has won the trophy, and the first time Liverpool have won the Charity Shield since 2006, when they beat Chelsea 2-1. Victory means Liverpool have now won the Charity Shield 16 times.
The Reds took the lead in the 21st minute when Alexander-Arnolds deflected shot found the corner of the net. It was just rewards for Jurgen Klopp's men, who started the match with a high tempo and intensity, pushing Man City back and forcing them into errors. The score remained 1-0 until the 70th minute, despite both teams having chances to score. With the game becoming stretched, one of City's two new strikers, Alvarez, equalised from close range, though his celebrations were delayed, as VAR took nearly 4 minutes to decide if he was offside. In the end the goal stood and for a while it looked like the game might be decided on penalties.
New boy Nunez makes his mark!
New Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez had other ideas however, and turned in a match winning performance, as he earned the Reds a penalty and scored the decisive 3rd goal as the clock ticked down. Nunez had been finding space in and around the City backline, and it was little surprise that it was his header that earned Liverpool a penalty, as his goal bound effort was blocked by Dias' arm in the 83rd minute. Again VAR was involved but after the referee reviewed the incident on the monitor, it was clear a penalty was the right decision. Despite the best efforts of the City players to waste time and get inside his head, Mo Salah coolly stepped up and scored the penalty.
Then, as the game entered the 94th minute Nunez sealed the victory, and capped a fine solo performance, with a stopping header past City keeper Ederson. It sparked wild scenes from the Liverpool players, with Nunez booked for taking off his short, and the Liverpool fans, as they knew that victory, and the seasons first trophy, was theirs!
