Liverpool win again in pre-season, beating Leipzig 5-0

Liverpool win again in pre-season

Liverpool’s pre-season preparations continued yesterday, with the 5-0 thrashing of RB Leipzig in Germany.  In what Manager Jurgen Klopp described as the “perfect night”, Liverpool comfortably outplayed and outclassed their German opponents.

Mohamad Salah set Liverpool on their way with a cool finish in the 8th minute before new signing Darwin Nunez, who came on at half time, silenced his critics with 4 goals in the second half.

Liverpool’s preparations continue apace with another game against RB Salzburg in 5 days.  Here are 3 things we noticed from the game.

Nunez is the real deal

Ok, it’s only pre-season.  But 4 goals in 45 minutes is impressive.  Opposition fans and pundits were already beginning to pile pressure on our new striker after several low key performances so far.  Klopp and the coaching staff were not worried though, and it turns out they know more about the Liverpool players than we do.  Klopp has publicly backed Nunez and asked fans to wait until he is fully fit.  After last night it would seem is he getting nearer to full fitness.  Leipzig were not great, but you can only play what’s in front of you, and Nunez showcased all the attributes that persuaded Klopp to buy him in the first place.

The kids are alright

Liverpool fans already knew that Harvey Elliott was special. You only have to watch him in games and in training to see he is a precocious talent with the self-confidence to take him to the very top. Add to that he loves Liverpool and is learning from some of the best coaches and players around, and there is little to suggest that he will not fulfil his potential.  If it wasn’t for the horrific injury he suffered last season Elliott would already be a Liverpool starter now.  This season is surely the breakout year where he confirms what Liverpool fans already know.

Having one ‘Wonderkid’ in your side is special, but having two is just plain greedy.  That is the reality Liverpool fans are slowly getting used to though, as new boy Fabio Carvalho once again showcased his skills and talent against Leipzig.  It’s only early days, and we don’t want to put too much pressure on the boy, but clearly Liverpool have another special player in their ranks.  Signing both players from Fulham for just over £10million seems almost unfair, but it’s another example of the fantastic work done by Michael Edwards and Julian Ward, to ensure that the very best players are not just signed by Liverpool, but signed early when their value is low.  We can only imagine what Elliott and Carvalho will be worth in a few seasons time….

No Mane is bigger than the club

Losing Sadio Mane was a big blow.  No one can deny the talent the lad has, or how crucial he has been to Liverpool’s recent success.  However, no one is bigger than the club, and if a player wants to leave then that is exactly what they should do.  One of Liverpool’s biggest strengths under Jurgen Klopp is their team spirit and togetherness.  Having just one player who doesn’t believe in the team, or want to be there, can upset the whole balance and dynamic of the squad.  As soon as Klopp learned that Mane was not 100% committed Liverpool, he quickly moved to sign his replacement, and tie down Liverpool’s other world class forward to a new deal.  It’s still early days, and we will not know the true impact of losing Mane until the end of the season, but the early signs are that Liverpool will once again challenge on all 4 fronts next season.  No Mane, no problem.
